DIY Hair Masks: The Best At-Home Hair Treatments

If you love to pamper yourself, hair masks are a great tool to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy both after and in between washes, and they’re a great way to prep your hair for its next big styling session. But with a lot of popular hair masks going on the market, they can become a lot more expensive than you might expect. Thankfully, there’s always DIY! So if you want to save a couple of coins for your next spa day, then look no further for a debriefing on why making and using DIY hair masks will be your next favorite addition to your self-care routine.

Why use Hair Masks, and Why DIY?

Let's be honest: hair masks are a godsend. Hair masks do more than the usual shampoo and conditioner by delivering many different nutrients to your hair in just thirty minutes, which make them perfect for use right before and after any hair-stripping or damaging styling processes such as bleaching or straightening your hair to get it back into a healthier state.

And there are many different hair masks that can do more than just conditioning. There are ones that can add more shine, influence growth, reduce the amount of oils in your hair, and even tame unruly frizz. For any hair qualm you might have, there’s a mask for it! But if you’re hesitant about the ingredients in off-the-shelf treatments, you can always stir up your own concoction to personalize your next spa day.

When doing a DIY hair treatment, you’ll know exactly what’s going into your hair, especially if you incorporate organic ingredients. Luckily, most of these ingredients are straight from your pantry anyway, so you won't even have to run to the store to get them!

hair mask For Frizzy Hair

If your hair is curly, and tends to look more like a nest than a mane with stray hairs everywhere, you might want to check out this anti-frizz hair mask made with bananas, yogurt, and honey. Bananas are full of potassium and vitamins that can help to smooth and condition those defiant hairs. Yogurt helps treat dull, damaged hair, and honey is amazing for retaining moisture, softening strands, and providing an ample amount of shine.

To make, mix 1 mashed banana, 2 tablespoons of yogurt, and 1 tablespoon of honey to a hefty paste. Be sure to put it on the length of your hair, let marinate for thirty minutes, rinse out, and viola! Frizz-free hair is now yours.

hair mask For Damaged Hair

If you often straighten, and/or bleach and dye your hair, a coconut oil, avocado and honey hair mask for damaged hair can work to revive and repair your delicate strands. Coconut oil is a wonderful ingredient that does wonders to anyone’s hair—namely nourishing and conditioning that will keep your hair soft and healthy. Avocado is a more interesting ingredient: the naturally fatty nature of this lovely green food offers about twenty different vitamins and nutrients, including potassium and Vitamins C and E, that will all work together to help repair and nourish your damaged hair.

Mash 1 full avocado, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon of honey in a bowl. Let sit for thirty minutes, and after rinsing, your hair will thank you.

hair mask For Dry Hair

If you often notice flakes of dandruff throughout the day, or your hair doesn’t soak up your conditioner the way it should, then this brown sugar and olive oil mask will help to recondition your dry hair. Brown sugar is a great ingredient that will exfoliate away the dead cells and extra buildup, while olive oil will condition, restrengthen, and add shine to your hair. For an extra dry-hair treatment, add in a couple drops of tea tree oil to relieve any itchiness.

Mix 2 tablespoons of brown sugar with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 2 drops of tea tree oil, and apply to your head from scalp to tip. Don’t be afraid to get in there! Rinse after thirty minutes, and feel the difference of your newly softened, clean hair.

Hair mask For Oily Hair

If you’re sick of constantly having to wash and rewash your hair due to excess oils, use this lemon and egg mask for an oil-control treatment. Lemon, besides being beautifully fragrant, will absorb extra oils in your hair, clean your scalp with its acidic nature, and will provide extra Vitamin C to strengthen. It can even fight off dandruff and has anti-fungal properties. The eggs will help to deliver Vitamins A, D, and E and fatty acids to your hair to add shine and continue to strengthen your strands with its proteins.

To use, whisk 2 egg whites and 1 squeezed lemon (or 2 tablespoons of lemon juice) together until fully combined. Apply liberally to damp hair, tie up in a shower cap, and let sit for thirty minutes. Rinse with shampoo and conditioner, and your hair will feel oil-free, lightweight, and truly fabulous.
