Night Cream vs. Day Cream - What's the Difference?

What's the difference between night cream and day cream? We explain. Check out what makes the products different and why they're used.

Night Cream and Day Cream: What to Know

If you want a healthy-looking and glowing skin, you need to embrace moisturizing. Applying creams has innumerable benefits for our skin that includes nourishment, youthfulness, and eradication of blemishes in addition to a healthy glow.

You can apply a day cream as well as a night cream to ensure that your skin gets its daily dose of antioxidants and other useful nutrition that it needs. But, a lot of people want to know whether there is a difference between a day cream and a night cream. They are branded as separate items but what really is the difference? Well, read on to find exactly that.

Day Cream

During the day, we have busy schedules that involve getting out stepping out of the house. On the way to our office, we get exposed to pollution, harmful radiation from the sun, and other environmental factors that can prove to be quite damaging for our skin. Then, of course, is the makeup that we put when we leave our house.

Keeping all these factors in mind, a day cream is designed with the primary function to protect and support our skin. It contains ingredients like SPF, antioxidants, and caffeine. SPF helps to protect the skin from the sun preventing sunburn and expedited aging. The presence of antioxidants helps to fight free radicals and brighten the skin from within. The presence of caffeine can help to firm the skin membranes and makes it look refreshed and alive.

Day creams also have a lighter consistency that helps to moisturize the skin. It should be noted that these creams normally skip the use of ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids and retinoids in their making. This is because these compounds may react with the sun that can make our skin becomes too sensitive. Also, if too many active ingredients are present in a single product, the overall effectiveness and efficiency may remarkably decrease.

Night Cream

After you’re done with the day, you tend to relax and lounge around in the night. If you work even after returning from the office, you should take a break to look after yourself.

In the night, we don’t have any exposure to the sun or pollution. Keeping this in mind, beauty companies manufacture night creams to repair and replenish the skin by promoting skin cell turnover. These creams also have a richer and heavier texture as they contain hydrating ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid, licorice, vitamin C, kojic acid, and so on. These ingredients can improve the overall appearance of the skin. The presence of ceramides and fatty acids help the skin to retain moisture while at the same time repairing the protective barrier of our skin. They are slow absorbing moisturizers that seep into the skin over the course of five to eight hours.

The most important ingredient, however, has to be retinol. The main purpose of night creams is to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as a result of its anti-aging formula. Retinol can be useful in achieving this.

Why You Need Both Day Creams and Night Creams in Your Daily Routine

As you can see, there is a difference between a day cream and a night cream. Not only do they have different consistencies, but their purpose of the use is separate as well.

It also doesn’t mean that any particular cream is more effective than the other. Night creams contain more active ingredients making it stronger but that doesn’t mean they’re more effective than day creams. Day cream contains ingredients that make them beneficial for use during the day. On the other hand, night cream can help to nourish skin all night long.

Having said this, it still doesn’t mean that you cannot use a night cream during the day and vice versa. But, if you do that then during the day, you might not get adequate protection from the sun whereas, during the night, you will not be able to avail of the anti-aging and deep moisturization benefits. Hence, it is better to adopt both these creams as a part of your daily skincare routine to help you give complete protection and rejuvenation to your skin 24 x 7.
